Greenwich Reach London

Formerly Greenwich Reach, and positioned along the waterfront, the impressive array of 980 apartments of New Capital Quay are surrounded by walkways, wide boulevards, public squares, feature landscapes, winter gardens – and a brand new Waitrose. Easy to see then, why it’s claimed as London’s most exciting new waterside village in years.

A closer look at this build-up at the Greenwich in London

Galliard Homes, delivered a system to help manage stormwater run-off during extreme weather events incorporating 38,446 Permavoid 150 units – providing 1,460m2 of water storage.

This project is living proof that making space for water and designing projects to include Green Infrastructure creates a more pleasant environment.

Story

Run-off discharged into the river

The geocellular units were installed beneath the roadway on a podium deck, allowing for the creation of an underground car park – providing the space needed to store high volumes whilst making use of valuable space. And as the Water Authority now charges for the amount of surface water run-off discharged into the river, the podium deck plays an important role helping to reduce it.

The site was partially Tidal Locked to ensure a full and effective storage and attenuation process to mitigate the risk of flooding and tidal breach.

Solution

Multifunctional blue-green roof System

The hollow Permavoid subbase makes it possible to store more rainwater in lightweight geocellular units underneath the soil in podium decks, blue-green roof systems and roof gardens. This stored rainwater is made available to the plants by capillary rise through capillary fibre columns in the Permavoid units. This nature- based solution of capillary irrigation eliminates the need for drip lines, valves, hoses, pumps and the associated maintenance requirements. Water is available for the plants when they need it, naturally, on-demand, and most importantly without the use of energy; just like in nature.

Water is the key to successful green infrastructure at any level, in every green design. Keep rainwater out of the sewer and put it to work to support, biodiversity and help cool the urban environment.
