Managing water in various ways.

From flourishing, water saving gardens at home to improving animal welfare in comfortable High Welfare Floor stables, Permavoid is at the core of divergent solutions to improve quality of life.

Solution

Water as building block.

People continously move to large metropolitan areas, resulting in the construction of more buildings and paved areas, which leads to a decrease in green infrastructure. This reduces the capacity for rainwater infiltration which, in combination with an increasing quantity of rainstorms, leads to more frequent and severe occurrences of urban flooding. At the same time built areas collect energy from the sun during the day and radiate this back to the city as heat during the night. In metropolitan areas the night-time temperature can be as much as 8 to 10 degrees than the surrounding countryside.

Where nature creates a microclimate in which it thrives, human settlements suffer from this urban heat-island effect, negatively impacting human lives and well-being.

We believe that no opportunity can be overlooked when it comes to enabling stormwater to improve quality of life.

Process

How does it work?

There are multiple applications where the Permavoid technology is of great use. To put it simple and clear; we understand the ways in which we can all benefit from managing water. That's why for the past 25 years specialized partners have reached out to us to cooperate. For example, for temporary sports events we have developed a FIH approved portable hockey pitch system where each layer of the system is reusable over and over. We've installed driving ranges on Italian cruise ships to play golf, smart easy-to-install home solutions and made sure animals are taken care of with HWF stables.

System functionality

The hollow Permavoid subbase makes it possible to store more rainwater in lightweight geocellular units underneath the soil in podium decks, blue-green roof systems and roof gardens. This stored rainwater is made available to the plants by capillary rise through capillary fibre columns in the Permavoid units. This nature- based solution of capillary irrigation eliminates the need for drip lines, valves, hoses, pumps and the associated maintenance requirements. Water is available for the plants when they need it, naturally, on-demand, and most importantly without the use of energy; just like in nature.

Water is the key to successful green infrastructure at any level, in every green design. Keep rainwater out of the sewer and put it to work to support, biodiversity and help cool the urban environment.

Systems

Cattle farming is changing. Technological developments and high consumer demands with regard to animal welfare and the environment are the driving these changes. High Welfare Floor addresses these demands, and more, with an innovative barn-floor concept. The working principle of the floor is based on immediate separation of animal waste; solid manure remains on the floor surface, to be automatically cleaned by a non-intrusive barn-robot and liquid drains through the floor into the Permavoid drainage layer, where it is easily removed from the stable.

This results in a considerable reduction of ammonia released to the atmosphere. And the immediate separation of solid and fluid manure fractions allows the dairy farmer to deal with the minerals from his own farm in a far more efficient manner, reducing fertilizer dependency.

Permavoid provides solutions for managing rainwater from residential developments. The modulair, lightweight systems are easy to transport and install. The shallow character of the system prevents the home owner from digging deep and expensive removal of heavy soils. The rangee of ancillaries wil make issues like attaching solar panels or connecting pipe systems a simple DIY job. Permavoid, sustainable drainage and atteniation systems to improve the places and spaces where we live.

Temporary solutions for rapidly changing cities. When for example a natural grass field has to be converted into artificial grass, the Permavoid sports foundation offers a frequently used temporary solution. For example, the field of a stadium in Dublin was completely converted into a temporary hockey field. Completely in accordance with the requirements of the FIH. Cities change quickly. Permanent solutions are therefore no longer always necessary.
