Heracles Almelo is one of the 18 participants in the Eredivisie, the highest Dutch football league. With a rich history since its founding in 1903, Heracles Almelo is a respected club that plays its matches in the Asito Stadium. During the 2014-2015 season, a large-scale renovation of the stadium took place, and since then the total capacity went up to 12,080 seats. Starting from the 2025-2026 season it will no longer be allowed to play on artificial turf in the Eredivisie. This prompted Heracles Almelo to transition to natural grass after the 2023-2024 season, ending 21 years of playing on artificial turf.

We installed this innovative under pitch drainage and air blanket system which comprised a layer of 85 Permavoid units, laid on a welded reinforced impermeable membrane, protected by a heavy-duty geotextile. The Permavoid units provide a void through which surface water can rapidly drain and air can be blown through for soil aeration.

The Permavoid system is used as a multifunctional subbase for synthetic turf pitches, being both high-strength and lightweight. Due to the open surface of the Permavoid units the pitch drains effectively and reliably over the entire surface, preventing standing water after peak rain events. The shallow construction depth speeds up the installation process, reduces material movements to and from site and the cellular reusable set up allows the creation of temporary and permanent sports pitches.

With an approved conventional shockpad the system is used as a system for rainwater capture, detention and/or infiltration. The Nature-based functionality of rainwater retention and capillary evaporation for adiabatic cooling of the pitch can be created using the BlueLay capillary shockpad in combination with an open-grid backing synthetic turf and natural sand infill.

The project focuses on innovations that revolve around urban cooling solutions, the circular use of (waste) material and rainwater, and safely playing sports on artificial grass pitches. We tested at two locations in Amsterdam: Marineterrein Amsterdam and V.V.A Spartaan at Laan van Spartaan.

In spring 2020 all sensors in the CitySports research-fields came online and have recorded some impressive results already. In the middle of the hottest period so far, on June 25 around mid-day, the surface temperature of the conventional synthetic turf was 62.2 °C degrees and the cooled synthetic turf with 35.9 °C degrees just 1 °C warmer than the natural grass!

July 2024 marks a significant milestone for TKI project CitySports as our research has been published in the renowned scientific journaln Sustainable Cities! This groundbreaking work showcases how artificial grass fields can effectively mitigate climate change impacts in urban areas. By integrating subsurface water storage and capillary irrigation, we've developed and validated a sports system that cools fields and manages rainwater, creating healthier environments for both the planet and players.

Mannoury is a unique 64 apartment building in Amsterdam that contributes to biodiversity, quality of life and energy transition by combining a blue-green roof, gray water treatment and efficient solar panels.

The building helps to cool the city and the solar panels, reduces the risk of flooding during heavy rain, reuses shower water in dry periods and above all, creates pleasant and healthy living conditions for residents. In addition to Project Urban PhotoSynthesis, Aedes also offset the CO2 emissions from the Mannoury building. By planting 28,000 trees, the investor compensates for the integral CO2 emissions of both construction and 25 years of residence.

Maanplein in Heerlen is the central plaza in the completely rebuilt city-centre, surrounded by high rise apartment buildings. It is one of 3 interconnected rooftop parks sited above the shopping center, Central train station and a parking garage.

It is intended as a place where people come together to walk or enjoy public events. Mature trees grow in specially designed mounds of lightweight soil on top of the roof over the shopping center. The entire square functions as a water collection basin with the use of the Permavoid 85 Capillary Irrigation System, and the water made available for the trees using the capillary irrigation system.

In a bilateral partnership between the Indian Government, the Dutch Government and a Dutch consortium of companies working under the organization Dutch Sports Infrastructure (DSI), India and the Netherlands launched the first Colourfield at JLN Stadium in New Delhi.

Colourfield is a multi-functional, sustainable, mini sports arena that combines a social sports education program with a high level innovative multi-sports facility, including a solar lighting center and the Greensource system. The field exemplifies Dutch innovative technology, as well as the best practices that have been customized according to the Indian context. Owing to India’s ambition of hosting big sporting events in the future, the Indian government endeavors to promote sports in the country, among others, at grassroots level.

So with the aim of exchanging knowledge on innovative sports infrastructure, research and coaching, the concept of Colourfield came into fruition with support from the Netherlands Government, Sports Authority of India, Dutch Sports Infrastructure and other stakeholders.

Work has been completed on the installation of a ground-breaking climate and water resilience research roof in the heart of Manchester. Unlike conventional green roofs, which use a drainage layer to simply remove rainwater, the 525 sq m blue-green structure retrofitted to Bloc’s flat roof stores rainwater beneath the planted surface where it lands. Advanced passive irrigation components within the attenuation layer draw water up through the structure to the underside of the green roof substrate to support surface planting.

The blue-green roof will help to develop a greater understanding of how new construction and data technologies can help cities and urban developments to mitigate the impact of climate change and population growth, while enhancing biodiversity.
